Provenance & Story

History

Chassis 57741 left Molsheim in April 1939 as a Gangloff-bodied Stelvio cabriolet. By the 1960s it was in the United States: the Summer 1966 issue of Pur Sang (Vol. 7, No. 2) records the Gangloff-bodied 57741 with its own motor, running at purchase after attention from noted Bugatti specialist Overton 'Bunny' Phillips and then undergoing a slow restoration. Long-term owner Ted Rose of Hidden Hills, California kept the car until April 1983, when George Rowland Jr. acquired it and retained it for nearly four decades, commissioning multi-phase restoration and mechanical work, including invoices exceeding USD 90,000 from one specialist and further work through 2000-2018, with over 300 pages of documentation and…
